RE: Overall Costs, Savings, Rebates, Incentives, State and Federal Tax Breaks
Here in the Big Sky Country, we get, on average, 5 peak sun-hours every day. These peak sun-hours offer a perfect opportunity to save big by investing in solar power. On most days Montana gets above average sunshine and with additional state tax credits solar power is very affordable and is one of the best home improvement investment options.
Solar Photovoltaic Systems:
Residential Solar PV (photovoltaic) systems are typically 5-7 kilowatts depending on your available rooftop area. Size and shade can limit how large a system can be. Each home is unique and the ideal capacity of your system will vary, homes with larger energy consumption will require more PV panels to capture all of its energy needs.
As your trusted solar installer in Montana we offer a detailed assessment of factors specific to your home. Below we look at the assessment for my home in Billings, MT.
Costs and Savings: Based on a $20,000, 5kW PV solar system in Montana.
Let’s start by breaking down and deducting incentives as listed. In Montana there is a fixed rebate available of $2,000 for all PV Systems over or above 2-kW. We start by taking this discount off the top leaving an investment of $18,000.
Currently there is a federal tax credit offered of 30%. With this incentive we reduce your investment by $5,400 bringing your price down to $12,600.
Now each taxpayer in your household may qualify for an additional $500 tax credit up to $1,000. Most households will qualify bringing the initial cost of your PV System down to $11,600. Your system should save you $600 in energy cost the first year in operation.
Your costs equal $11,000 with an expected payback of 13 years. From there you can expect FREE Energy from your solar panels and can consider the net profit to be $14,000.
